Dual Diagnosis is a condition where a person is diagnosed with both a mental health disorder and a substance abuse disorder and  is also known as co-occurring disorders.

Our range of services includes intervention, detoxification, residential and outpatient care, aftercare and sober living, among other services which are customized to meet your specific individual needs.

    Understanding Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines are one of the most frequently prescribed types of prescription drugs in the U.S. Research at The National Institutes of Health reports that Benzodiazepine use is associated with mental disorders, emergency room visits, suicidal ideation, and substance use. Data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration shows that most people who abuse benzos obtained benzodiazepines from friends or relatives, with only approximately 20% receiving them from their doctor. Benzodiazepines should only be used as directed by a qualified and experienced physician and under close medical supervision. These prescription drugs should never be shared with others. At Recovery Beach in Orange County, we provide a comprehensive continuum of care for benzodiazepine addiction treatment in our rehab centers.

    What are benzos?

Benzodiazepines (benzos) are psychoactive prescription drugs that are used to treat anxiety, panic disorders, and insomnia. Benzos work by enhancing the activity of a neurotransmitter in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which helps to decrease the activity of the central nervous system, resulting in a calming effect. There are various types of benzodiazepines including Xanax, Valium, Ativan, and Klonopin. Benzos are classified as controlled substances in the U.S.

While prescription benzodiazepines can be effective in treating certain health conditions, they are also associated with a risk of dependence, addiction, and withdrawal symptoms, especially with long-term use or misuse. Some people use benzos recreationally to experience the calming and sedative effects they may provide. Benzodiazepines should only be used as directed by a healthcare provider and under their strict medical supervision.

What are the side effects of benzo abuse?

Physical dependence: Benzodiazepines can cause physical dependence, where the body becomes accustomed to the drug’s presence and requires it to function normally. The risk of dependence and developing an addiction to benzos is higher for those who take them for an extended period or in higher doses than prescribed. The signs of addiction to benzos include:

    • Taking more than the prescribed dose or more frequently than prescribed
    • Continuing to use benzos despite negative consequences such as health problems, relationship difficulties, or financial issues.
    • Spending a lot of time and energy obtaining, using, and recovering from the effects of benzos.
    • Developing a tolerance to benzos, when higher doses are needed to achieve the same effects.
    • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when attempting to stop using benzos.
    • Neglecting responsibilities at home, work, or school due to benzo use.
    • Engaging in risky behaviors such as driving under the influence of benzos.
    • Losing interest in activities that were once enjoyable.
    • Continuing to use benzos despite wanting to quit or cut back on use
    • Focusing on obtaining and using benzos to the exclusion of other interests and relationships.

Withdrawal symptoms: When benzodiazepine use is stopped suddenly, withdrawal symptoms can occur, including anxiety, insomnia, tremors, and seizures. Stopping benzodiazepine abuse and withdrawal requires reducing the dose or using a tapering schedule managed by medical professionals. Support groups can increase the success rate of withdrawal. In severe cases of benzo withdrawal, withdrawal may mimic intense psychiatric conditions such as mania, schizophrenia, panic disorder, depression, seizures and generalized anxiety disorder.

Alcohol use and benzodiazepine abuse together create a dangerous combination and increase the effects of both substances and may enhance psychological effects. There is an increased risk of overdose from using these two substances together. Benzos can remain in your system longer when used in conjunction with alcohol.

Some of the withdrawal symptoms of benzo abuse and addiction include:

    • Cognitive impairment: Long-term benzodiazepine abuse can lead to memory impairment, problems with attention and concentration, and other cognitive deficits.
    • Increased risk of accidents: Benzodiazepines may cause drowsiness and impaired coordination, which can increase the risk of accidents, falls, and other injuries.
    • Respiratory depression: High doses of benzodiazepines can cause respiratory depression, which can be life-threatening.
    • Mental health problems: Benzodiazepine abuse may  lead to the development of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and psychosis.
    • Overdose: Benzodiazepine overdose can be fatal, particularly when combined with other drugs or alcohol.
