What Are Opiates and Opioids?
Opioids are a type of medication that doctors frequently prescribe to treat pain. They work by binding to receptors in the brain and body, reducing the sensation of pain. Opiates, on the other hand, are substances derived directly from the opium poppy plant, such as morphine and codeine. Both opioids and opiates can be highly addictive.
In the United States, addiction to opioids and opiates has become a significant public health concern. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, an estimated 2 million Americans struggle with substance use disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers, and an additional 600,000 have disorders related to heroin. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 500,000 people died from opioid overdoses between 1999 and 2019. This alarming statistic underscores the urgency of addressing opioid addiction treatment in Orange County.

How to Recognize Signs of Opiate/Opioid Addiction
Opiate and opioid addiction refer to a condition where individuals become dependent on these substances due to their powerful effects on the brain. When someone is addicted to opiates or opioids, they develop a compulsive urge to use these drugs despite knowing the harm they cause. This addiction can disrupt their daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. Recognizing the signs is crucial for early intervention and OC opiate addiction treatment.
Common opioid and opiate addiction signs include:
- Cravings: Feeling a strong desire or urge to use opiates or opioids.
- Loss of Control: Being unable to limit or stop drug use, even when wanting to.
- Increased Tolerance: Needing higher doses of opiates or opioids to achieve the same effects.
- Withdrawal Symptoms: Experiencing physical and psychological symptoms when attempting to stop or cut down drug use.
- Neglecting Responsibilities: Prioritizing drug use over work, school, or family obligations.
- Social Withdrawal and family issues: Pulling away from friends, family, and social activities.
- Financial Problems: Spending significant money on obtaining drugs, which leads to financial difficulties.
- Changes in Behavior: Displaying mood swings, irritability, or secretive behavior.
- Physical Symptoms: Experiencing constipation, drowsiness, or pinpoint pupils.
- Legal Issues: Facing legal consequences related to drug use, such as arrests or charges.
If you or someone you know exhibits these signs and symptoms, seeking help from Orange County opioid rehab is a crucial step toward recovery.
How Does Orange County Opioid Addiction Treatment Work?
At Recovery Beach, we believe in a comprehensive approach to overcoming opioid/opiate addiction, tailoring our treatment plan to meet your unique needs and circumstances.
Firstly, we prioritize your safety and comfort during medical detoxification. This phase involves gradually tapering off opioids under the supervision of our medical team. They’ll closely monitor your vital signs and administer medications as needed to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Our goal here is to help you navigate this challenging period with as little discomfort as possible while ensuring your physical well-being.
Following detox, we may introduce medication-assisted treatment (MAT) as part of your ongoing care. MAT combines medications like methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone with counseling and therapy. These medications work in various ways: some reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, others block the euphoric effects of opioids, and some prevent opioid overdose.
Therapy and counseling are integral components of our treatment program, providing you with the tools and support needed to address the psychological and emotional aspects of addiction. Through individual and group therapy sessions, you’ll explore the underlying reasons behind your addiction, learn healthier coping mechanisms, and develop strategies to manage triggers and cravings.
Additionally, we encourage participation in support groups like Narcotics Anonymous (NA) or SMART Recovery. These groups offer a supportive community of individuals who understand firsthand the challenges of addiction. By sharing experiences, providing encouragement, and offering mutual support, support groups can be invaluable in fostering a sense of connection, accountability, and hope throughout your recovery journey.

Our treatment at Recovery Beach is suitable for anyone struggling with opioid/opiate addiction, regardless of age, background, or severity of addiction. Our programs cater to individuals from all walks of life, including adults, adolescents, and seniors. We understand that everyone’s journey to sobriety is unique. Therefore, our personalized approach ensures that your treatment plan is tailored to meet your specific needs and goals. The duration of treatment varies depending on individual progress and circumstances. Some programs last several weeks to months; others offer longer-term support and aftercare services.

Opioid Addiction FAQs
Opioids are extremely addictive, especially when taken outside of the prescribed range. If you or your loved one is suffering from opioid addiction, no matter how serious the addiction is, help should be recruited as soon as possible. Opioid addiction can result in death.
What are opioids? How addictive are opioids?
What are the different types of opioids?
- Oxycodone (Oxycontin): Oxycodone is prescribed to treat severe pain. With the main ingredient being morphine, oxycodone binds to receptors in the central nervous system. There are several brand names for oxycodone, including the well-known Oxycontin.
- Hydrocodone (Vicodin): Vicodin is a brand name for the opioid combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen. It’s prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain but can be highly addictive as it’s an opioid. Individuals who misuse Vicodin often start to misuse or become addicted to stronger opioids.
- Percocet: Percocet is a prescription opioid that is a combination drug. Percocets can come directly from the Opium plant or be made in a lab by scientists. Similar to Vicodin, they are prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain.
What is considered opioid misuse & opioid addiction?
Opioid misuse and addiction are defined differently, but both require treatment. While addiction is much more severe, misuse is also serious. Opioid misuse is described as not following doctor instructions when taking prescribed opioids. It can include taking them to get high or even using someone else’s prescribed opioids. Addiction, on the other hand, is a chronic brain disease. Individuals suffering from addiction will compulsively seek out drugs, even if they know they are harming them.
What is the leading cause of opioid addiction?
How does opiate addiction affect a person's life?
What age group is most at risk for opioid addiction?
In 2020, preventable opioid overdose deaths rose by 41%. 2020 was the year that the nation experienced a global pandemic, leaving many without jobs and homes. While others were simply left with more free time, we saw a huge increase in opioid overdoses during this time. And the problem continues to grow. Ages 25–34 are experiencing the most opioid overdose deaths, with ages 25–54 experiencing the most deaths. Thankfully, children under 15 are experiencing few opioid-related deaths, but we are seeing more individuals aged 55 and up experience death by opioid abuse. Seven out of ten preventable opioid deaths are male victims as of 2020.
